Our Second Language Curriculum is designed to address the needs of students engaged in the study of Spanish as a second language, regardless of the grade level at which they begin the study. It recognizes that all students start acquiring a second language in the same way and therefore go through the same stages of language development, although they may participate in different learning activities which are age appropriate, and relate to the students interests and experiences. Our classes with be fun, and motivating with games and hands on activities. The students will learn vocabulary and basic phrases, simple verbs and expressions, songs and more! We will also have story time in Spanish, role play and will play traditional games of Latin America.
The class will be offered by Maria Newkirk owner of Destin Language Academy. Maria is originally from Caracas, Venezuela and has a bachelor's degree in Spanish and English as a Second language. (Maria is a Way Home and Lionsgate member and homeschool mommy to Christina, Allison, Lauren, Steven, Julia and Isabelle)
Cost: $80 per semester and this includes all the materials such as worksheets, crafts and lap books, music, puppets and more.
Our curriculum is organized around five goals, which correspond to the program outcomes.
LISTENING GOAL: To understand language in context when spoken by an educated native speaker.
SPEAKING GOAL: To speak the second language so as to be understood by a native speaker.
READING GOAL: To read and understand the target language in context.
WRITING GOAL: To write so as to be understood by a native speaker of the target language.
CULTURAL GOAL: To gain knowledge and understanding of other people and their ability to use language and behavior characteristic of real-life situations in the cultures in which the language is spoken.
STAGE ONE: Pre-School and Elementary School.
At this stage all (Pre-K-5th grade) students will learn the same themes but the vocabulary will vary depending on the grade level. Students will start by understanding and producing isolated words and learned phrases. Later, they can understand and use everyday words, action words, commands, simple phrases, sentences and questions, related to the themes being taught. At this stage comprehension is generally better than language production. Students develop aural/oral skills first; then they begin to read and write what they can already understand and say.
