January News at Creative Learning Connection

Writers’ Cub
Our next get together at CLC for writers is Thursday, January 19. The official time is from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Plan to come for any portion of that time that works for you. Bring your laptops, your latest project and idea(s), or just your questions.

The idea is to encourage each other, ask questions, get feedback, etc. If we meet once a month (or so) it will give us deadlines to aim for, for our next goals, and we all know how important deadlines are! (I know I make them and move them on a regular basis!)

If you’ve missed the first Self-Publishing Workshops, feel free to still join us. We’ll all try to get you caught up on any of the general publishing information you’ve missed.

As usual, an email (cmmjaime@alum.mit.edu) letting me know you’re planning to attend would be great, so that we know how many folks to expect!

Encouragement Workshop
Our Mid-Year Encouragement Workshop is coming up, Friday, February 3 and Saturday, February 4. We are doing things a little differently this time, with general topics for the day, and not specific workshops/workshop times. We’ll be focusing on teaching teens on Friday and teaching younger students on Saturday. (But come when you can – and we will adapt as necessary!)

Our workshop days will be broken down into two sessions, 9:30 to 12:00 and 1:00 to 3:30…So a total of four sessions between the two days…Come to as few or as many sessions as you can work into your schedule.

During the sessions, we will have a combination of lecture, discussions, and questions and answers – all sprinkled with fun and fellowship!

Additionally, the store will be open for shopping those days from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

There is no charge to attend, but if you can email us at cmmjaime@alum.mit.edu with the day(s)/session(s) you are planning to attend, it would be helpful to us for planning purposes!

Huntsville Shakespeare Project
There is still a little time to sign up for the Shakespeare classes:
The Huntsville Shakespeare Project, Part Two is an in-depth study of Shakespeare integrated with English Language Arts curriculum and special studies in Theatre Arts. Schools throughout the north central region of Alabama are participating in four to eight week residencies, hosting Artist-in-Residence, Susan Guthrie. Ms. Guthrie is the author and lead artist of the project.

The Creative Learning Connection is hosting Ms. Guthrie, and she will be holding two classes each week, beginning February 7 and 8, and ending March 20 and 21, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. There will be a total of eight classes in this session. The Tuesday class is for grades 2nd through 6th. The Wednesday class is for junior high and high school students. Students are asked to wear “roll-around” clothes and bring something to drink during a class break.

Contact Catherine Jaime at CLC at cmmjaime@alum.mit.edu or 256-325-3305 or Susan at director@twelfthnighttheatre.org if you have questions.

Here is a brief description of activities and curriculum, plus the artist can be contacted if parents have questions:

Students will learn the stories of several Shakespeare plays through Creative Drama, Storytelling, and Improvisation. Unique activities and a fast pace will introduce classical verse form and rhythm. Students will study the characters and plots, while gaining historical perspective. Modern parallels are drawn bringing these classic works into accessible action. Participants work in groups and individual tutorials; group skills are developed, peer evaluation is honed as students form a unique ensemble. Stage Combat will be studied – principals of safety, illusion, self-control, and skill. All activities lead to corresponding assignments in Creative Writing. The session culminates in a final project reflecting all the work during the eight weeks – major scenes, text readings, original readings, original verse scenes, and stage combat demonstrations.

Highlights:

? Storytelling and Improvisation
? Classical Verse and Rhythm
? Creative Writing
? Unique Activities, fun and fast-paced
? Stage Combat

Early enrollment for the eight-week session is $120 per student, $100 for additional sibling(s). If enrolling after January 16, the fee is $150 per student. Checks may be made payable to the artist, “Susan Guthrie” and mailed or brought to Creative Learning Connection (8006 Old Madison Pike, Ste 11-A, Madison, ALD 35758). See enrollment form below.
