Birthday Specials at CLC Today and Monday
February 12, 2009
Good news, we’re Open again! Back to our usual hours – Monday through Thursday, 12 to 5 p.m.
We do plan to start taking Consignments again on Monday, February 16. Unfortunately, the list of things we can take on consignment has shrank significantly due to CPSIA. See the bottom of the newsletter for more on consignments and CPSIA. Today, Thursday, February 12, is the 200th Birthday of Abraham Lincoln. In honor of that, we will be giving a 25% discount today and Monday, February 16, on ALL our Presidents’ materials (Books, Lapbooks, Pencils, etc.).
Today is also the 200th Birthday of Charles Darwin. In recognition of that fact, we will be giving a 25% discount on all of our Creation Science materials today. Additionally, we will be allowing each family who visits us today or Monday to borrow one Creation Science video or audio for no charge. (Our usual lending library fee is $3 per item.)

CPSIA Update: Yes, the law has gone into effect. No stay on the lead limits was issued at the 11th hour. Contrary to what some groups are saying to their members, the only people who got an extension were the manufacturers. While we applaud that move, the CPSC has made it clear that the lead limits are in effect – and it is illegal for retailers and resellers to sell anything that might contain too much lead. Since no one has been required to test those items, we are left to our best guesses to determine what we can legally sell – but the guidance has been fairly simple – basically we can sell books that were printed after 1985. That’s about it for used children’s products! And yesterday, we were informed that we can’t even GIVE AWAY items that are non-compliant.
Please contact your senators and ask them to support the bill that South Carolina Senator DeMint is trying to get to the Senate floor – a bill that would amend the CPSIA, and fix most of the problems we have with it. At the moment that seems to be our best hope for any sanity coming to this problem.
Consignments: Partially in response to the CPSIA issues we have rewritten our Consignment policies. Those are posted on our website. For those who are familiar with the old rules, I would like to summarize the changes (and again, these do not apply to items that have already been consigned.) 1) We will be giving new numbers to Consignors, even those who have already consigned in the past. 2) The check option is gone – we will only be taking items for credit. 3) The credit percentages are being changed to 50% for us and 50% for the consignors 4) The listed option is also gone – we are going to strictly unlisted. 5) Materials intended for Children 12 and under will be limited to just books, and those must have been printed after 1985. (It will save time if you check the copyright dates before you bring them in.)
We apologize for having to make some of these changes – but it is that or close our doors. Our hope is that these changes will allow us to continue to serve the homeschooling community.
