One more December newsletter from Creative Learning Connection: Longer hours next week, New Special, Movie Night, initial information on our January Seminar, and January Classes Schedule. Special discounts this week: Get a 25% discount on any purchase of at least $50 of games and/or puzzles. Movie Night: Come enjoy Henry Winkler’s An American Christmas Carol with us. Monday, December 17. We will meet at 6:00 p.m., order pizzas, enjoy the movie, and the fellowship, the week before CHRISTmas. (Pizzas are $3/person or $10/family.) Please bring a drink and/or snack to share with the group. January Seminar: Are you just getting started homeschooling? Or just need a mid-year “shot in the arm” ? Join us Friday and Saturday, January 25 and 26, for our Mid-Year Seminar. We will have several veteran homeschoolers giving some great workshops. We will have 8 workshops each day to choose from, and there is no charge to attend! We hope to have the workshop titles listed on the website (www.CreativeLearningConnection.com) by the beginning of January. Class Title: The Novels of Jane Austen Age or Grade: High School and mature Junior High Students Instructor: Vicki Drude, MA Day/Dates/Times: Tuesdays, January 8 – February 26, 2008; 10 a.m. – 12 Noon Brief Description: An introduction to six works by one of the greatest novelists of the English language. This 8-week course will cover all six of the novels; students will be required to read Pride and Prejudice and two others of their choice. Classes will consist of lecture and discussion. Major types of literary criticism will be introduced, and students can also expect to gain a basic understanding of Regency England’s culture as reflected by its greatest writer. The book will be the same one from Level 1, "Signing is for Everyone". Cost/Class, Semester, etc.: Cost is $60 for 12 week class, plus a 1 time $5 fee for supplies. Brief Description: A 2 hour course including media savvy, color theory, no-brush techniques, lines, shapes, shades of color, and perspective. My kids have done Treasures with Susie for 2 years, and they have enjoyed it very much! TREASURES is an educational program incorporating activities to sharpen Bible, Spelling, Math, Science, History and Geography Memory Skills! Your children will be learning about the United States of America, including all fifty states along with their capitals, nicknames, historical landmarks, the United States Constitution, the Preamble, the Thirteen Original Colonies, and all 43 Presidents of the United States. An indepth study of the Eastern and Western Hemispheres will reinforce basic geographical facts. This year will also include a study of The Ten Commandments our Solar System. Our study of the Solar System will include facts about the planets and our astronauts. During each class, every child is provided with an assortment of manipulatives, such as silly putty, cars, trucks, airplanes, animals, and colored chips, which are used in the various activities. Handouts are also included in this program which reinforce the class activities. Children who complete the handouts and prepare a project will receive a Certificate of Participation along with a beautiful Trophy during the month of April.
