Reminder: We will open 8:30 – 5:30 this Friday (August 3rd) and Saturday (August 4th) for the "Tax-Free Weekend" and for our Homeschooling Workshops. FALL STUDENT WRITING WORKSHOPS with Cathy Puett Miller, Independent Literacy Consultant Using the 6+1 Traits System of Teaching and Evaluating Writing An experienced writer herself, Mrs. Miller’s classes include discussions of great published writing, in-class exercises to build idea generation, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions (editing and revising), and presentation, and individualized attention. Students will also be assigned writing between classes. Whether your child is a reluctant or enthusiastic writer, Mrs. Miller will focus on evaluating and meeting their needs. Best of all, your child will learn to love writing. Ten-Week Classes begin week of September 4th and go through November 13 (with no class October 9). Separate classes serving: 4th through 6th grade (1 hour once a week)- Tuesdays 9:00AM-10:00AM 2nd through 3rd grade (1 hour once a week) – Tuesdays 10:30AM-11:30AM 7th through 9th grade (1 hour once a week) - Tuesdays 12:00-1:00PM 10th through 12th grade (1 hour once a week) - Tuesdays (1:30-2:30PM) Pricing starts at $123 per student-- family discounts apply for multiple children (a 20% discount for families or $99 per family member). Cost includes portfolio and individualized writing evaluations. Check or cash accepted for tuition A minimum of six students needs to be registered for each class in order for it to be offered. In addition,a basic grammar review and composition instruction will be included in the course. Minimum: 5 students required $25 per month *Discount for multiple students **No class on Thursday, September 6 or the week of Thanksgiving and Christmas! High School British Literature Tuesdays, 2:00 3:30 p.m. In this survey of British literature, the student will study significant historical events and literature from each major time period. Composition and literary analysis will be an integral part of this course. *Addditional course materials may be required, but every attempt will be made to keep the cost of the materials for the entire course under $25 (this would be the cost of a textbook). Michele taught high school English (grades 9, 10, 12) for 5 years during which time she received Teacher of the Year award and MS Star Teacher (1997).She holds credentials in two states and is "highly qualified" to teach Secondary English grades 7-12 and Secondary Language Arts grades 6-12 in both MS and AL. To sign up for either Literature Class above, contact Michele at pentonmichele@knology.net * * * * * * * Beginner/Intermediate Drawing Class This series of 12 drawing classes will focus on pencil drawing techniques, light, shadow, composition, and perspective. Classes will be taught on Tuesdays from 1:00-2:30p at Creative Learning Connection beginning in September. The classes will meet during the months of September, October and November. These classes are recommended for students in 4th grade or higher. The monthly fee is $45 and includes all drawing supplies needed for the class. (3rd-5th grade) This fun and interactive class will help get your child ready for the upcoming school year by reviewing and/or introducing important Language Arts skills. As we focus on: synonyms, multiple-meaning words, commas, capitalization, subject-verb agreement, punctuation, irregular verbs, adverbs, homophones, prefixes and suffixes, prepositional phrases, and pronouns, the children will use their creativity to explore the wonderful world of creative writing! Through games and involvement, your child will be able to learn at a pace comfortable for all. We will discover various forms of writing including lyrics, prose, haiku, free verse, and more. By the end of the class, your child(ren) will have the tools to write in each of these forms of poetic verse. Each class session will include a Bible lesson, craft, a writing activity, game, and a snack. We will be stressing the importance of hiding God's Word in our hearts as we memorize one verse each week. Fees: $20 per child for all 4 sessions Dates: Thursdays, October 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th Time: 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. ~~**There is a 20% discount for siblings.**~~ "Stone Soup" Literature-Based Unit Study (ages 6 - 11 year olds) Come and make stone soup with us as we open up the familiar classic by Marcia Brown entitiled Stone Soup. Your child will use their listening and reading comprehension skills as we read through this book together. This class will include various Language Arts activities, Math application, Science and Health, Art, Social Studies, and even Music and games! This 4 week unit study will not only encourage your child's love for reading but also open the door for much fun and interaction! (In the fall, 1 meeting/month is Mock Trial related; in the spring, 1 meeting/month is Youth Legislature related.) Cost: $20/family/semester The following times have been changed slightly: Civil Rights Class – Junior High/High School Students Wednesdays, 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. $25/month Learn about the big events and people of the Civil Rights Movement, and some important, related, Supreme Court cases. Classes will involve various amounts of discussion, lectures, activities, and some videos. Shakespeare Class – Junior High/High School Students Wednesdays, 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. $20/month We will watch & read (& occasionally discuss) Shakespeare plays. Constitution Class -- High School Students Wednesdays, 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. $20/month Discussions, Activities, Lectures We will be studying the History of the Constitution, the Constitution itself, and major Supreme Court cases. Classes will involve various amounts of discussion, lectures, activities, and some videos.
