Spring/Summer News at Creative Learning Connection
April 20, 2007
Well, I forgot two things the last time I sent this out -- the title, which I know makes some people uneasy about reading emails, and a special we're running on copies. So, I'm sending this out again, with the addition of those two pieces of information added! From now through May 10, we're running a 1/2 price sale on copies. So, regular copies, instead of being 5 cents each, will only be 2.5 cents each. Cost: $10/student Used Book Sales Now is a great time to start selling the things we're done with, and picking up "new" things for next year. The dates we currently have on the calendar for sales this spring at CLC are: Monday, April 30th, Thursday, May 31st, Monday, June 18th, July 16th (A Date will be set later for August) Those sales will begin at 7:00 p.m. and go to approximately 9:00 p.m. Sellers may arrive between 6:00 and 6:30 to set up their books. (Be sure to bring cash, to make it easier to buy and sell. We provide the space and the tables. There is no charge to participate in the Used Book Sales. (Leaving leftover books at CLC afterwards on consignment is an option, but there is no pressure.) And please help spread the word to others who might be interested. The more who participate, the more we all benefit. Club Invention – E.Z. Science Tuesday afternoons, 1:00 – 3:00 P.M. (May 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd) We still have a few slots in our May Club Invention. This is a wonderful hand-on Science program for students in Grades 1 – 6; Cost is $69 for the 4-week session. Here’s the description of this month’s Club Invention from their website: “E.Z. Science, the dedicated, yet absent-minded manager of E.Z. Science Journal, has enlisted the help of the children at Club Invention. Despite his good intentions, E.Z. has misplaced several articles and needs the children's skills in mathematics and science to make the magazine's print deadline. Children first discover that important portions of this month's feature article are missing. They must conduct experiments, such as measuring time with a time glass and inflating balloons with carbon dioxide, to gather necessary information for the article. Next, children complete the advice column by solving a knot puzzle, protecting eggs from a 3-foot drop, and creating a game with instructions. After giving their best advice, children move on to the student exchange column, where they design and construct a device to make schoolwork easier. The magazine is finally ready to print; however, the presses have broken down! Children review simple machines to repair the press and get the wheels rolling. With the magazine printed, children create mazes leading to the magazine's distribution centers and restore order at the E.Z. Science Journal by providing inventive science and mathematical solutions to everyday problems.” Geography Fair Monday, May 7th from 1:00 – 3:00 P.M. (new date, sorry!) Geography Fairs are such a great way for students to learn about a specific state, country, or other region of the world. They pick a place, do their research, and make some sort of a display for others to see. They may do lots of research, or just scratch the surface; there is no right or wrong way to do this. Poster boards work well; as do Science Fair boards. National Geographics often have good pictures and maps – and the internet is also a good source of information and visuals. They may prepare a short oral presentation if they would like. Please sign up, with a list of which region(s) your family would like to present. There is no cost to participate, but if each family would like to bring a snack to share at the end of the presentations, that would be great. (Regional foods are always welcome, but not mandatory!) Student Workshop: Jamestown – the 400th Anniversary!!! Tuesday, May 29th 1:00 – 2:30 P.M. Aimed at ages 7 and up, cost is $10/student. In this workshop students will learn about the early history of our Country; who came before the Pilgrims, and why; what types of hardships they survived; and the importance of John Smith in their survival.
