Silent Auction
We are excited to be holding a Silent Auction in September
to aid the Government Club. The Auction begins Monday,
September 18th and ends Monday, September 25th at 9:00 p.m.
We have all kinds of neat things being auctioned: Games,
Books, a 1 Year Membership at CLC (retail value $100), Gift
Cards, and much more! Stop by and see what we have!

“Getting Started Homeschooling”
Monday, September 11th
Are you just starting to homeschool?...Or are you thinking
about it for the future?...Or has the year just begun and
you’re already wondering if you’re doing a good job?
Catherine has been encouraging home educators for many
years, as they find their way through this adventure. Come
for an evening of encouragement.

“Enjoying Teaching Teens; Not Just Surviving Them!”
Monday, September 25th
Catherine Jaime will share from her experiences of teaching
her 12 children (7 of whom have already graduated from Home
Schooling). She will explain credits, transcripts,
getting into college, and much more.

“Making and Using Unit Studies”
Monday, October 2nd
Are you ready for a more relaxed approach to educating your
children? Are textbooks driving you all to distraction? Let
Catherine Jaime, 25-year homeschooling veteran, share with
you some ideas and techniques for making your own unit
studies. She will present ideas about teaching Lewis &
Clark, presidents, states, the War Between the States, and
many more. Whether you are teaching one student or 12
students, she will share with you many ways to make the
process more enjoyable!

(Some of the times have been adjusted slightly, please be
sure to look closely at ones you are interested in.) If
you are interested in any of these, but haven’t signed up
yet, please do so quickly….Some of the classes are filling
up, and a couple are about to be cancelled for lack of
sufficient numbers…)

Junior High/High School Classes:

Botany or Chemistry
Taught by: Emily Sewell
Grades: 10 - 12
Days and Times: Mondays, 10:30 to 1:00
Cost: $40/month & lab fee of $35/semester
Emily had hoped to teach both Botany AND Chemistry this
semester, but her schedule is not allowing it. She will be
offering whichever of these two has the most interest by
September 1st.
Some topics that will be covered in the Botany class: plant
structure, plant physiology and development, genetics,
ecology, application to life, and plants and medicine

Physics
Taught by: Stan Liou
Prerequisite: Algebra 2
Days and Times: Mondays and Fridays, 9:30 – 11:30

Shakespeare
Taught by: Catherine Jaime
Days and Times: Wednesdays, 1-2:30 p.m.
Cost: $20/month
Note: We read aloud the plays, from beginning to end,
discuss them briefly, and oftentimes watch the video
version. We also look at the historical background for the
historically based plays. Lots of fun! The particular
plays will be determined at the beginning of each semester.
Students may join us for 1 play, 1 semester, the entire
school year, or anything in between!

Economics
Taught by: Catherine Jaime
Days and Times: Wednesdays, 2:30-4 p.m.
Cost: $20/month
Note: There is no "textbook" for this class. Instead,
there will be a $25 registration fee to cover the student
subscriptions to the Wall Street Journal and the Ideas on
Liberty that we use as our primary sources.

Creation Science
Taught by: Catherine Jaime
Days and Times: Wednesdays, 4:00 – 5:00
Cost: $15/month
Note: We will primarily be using materials from Answers in
Genesis. Class periods will consist of watching various
Creation videos and discussing them.

Government Club
Days and Times: Most 1st and 3rd Wednesdays, 10 a.m. - 12
noon. (see the Govt Club page for a more precise schedule)
Learn about, discuss, debate current Government topics, as
well as foundational government issues.

Classes for Various Ages:

Student Writing Workshops
Taught by: Cathy Puett Miller, Independent Literacy
Consultant
Grade Levels: a) 4th – 6th; b) 7th – 9th; c) 10th – 12th
Days and Times: a) Tuesdays 2:30 – 3:30; b) Tuesdays 3:45
– 4:45; c) Thursdays 4 – 5
Cost: $125 for 11 weeks. (Family discounts for multiple
students.)
Cost includes portfolio and individualized writing
evaluations.
An experienced writer herself, Mrs. Miller’s classes
include discussions of great published writing, in-class
exercises to build idea generation, organization, voice,
word choice, sentence fluency, conventions (editing and
revising), and presentation, and individualized attention.
Students will also be assigned writing between classes.
Whether your child is a reluctant or enthusiastic writer,
Mrs. Miller will focus on meeting their needs.
A class may be arranged for the 2nd and 3rd grade group if
there is enough interest.

Artful Crafting
Taught by: Emily Sewell
Grades: 3rd and up
Days and Times: Fridays from 10:30-12:30
Cost: $35 per month; plus an art fee of $40 per semester
for supplies

Some projects: vegetable stamping, paper mache, painting,
keepsake box collage,
t-shirt painting, holiday ornaments, foam art, holiday
crafts, nature crafts, and much more.

Flora and Fauna
Taught by: Emily Sewell
Grades: 3rd – 6th grade
Days and Times: Fridays from 1:00 – 2:30
Cost: $25 per month and a lab fee of $40 per semester
(there will be lots of little labs!)
Class layout: one semester will be plants and the other
will be animals, there will be many labs, worksheets, and
fun activities that will make the topic be more interesting
than a lecture

Some topics that will be covered: growth cycle of a plant,
pollination, pollinators, plant parts, types of plants, how
to grow a plant, why plants are necessary, kinds of
animals, habitats, food web, insects, ecology, and
recycling.
