The Financial History of U.S.

by Catherine Jaime

From the Introduction:  This was researched and written initially during the fall of 2008, as the current crisis first came to the forefront of our thoughts.  It was updated again a year later, in November 2009.

The current financial state of affairs has been called a “financial tsunami”, a “financial ice age”, and “the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression”.

Our first question needs to be, “Is it?”  Our next question might be, “How did we get here?”  As someone who enjoys the study of both history and economics, I see these questions as both important and interlinked!

So began my search for information – hours and hours on the internet and more hours of cable news than I normally tolerate in a year; all in an attempt to make sense of what is going on and how we got here.  I’m sure there are many who are more qualified to explain what happened and what is happening – but if they are writing it up for every day folks like us, I haven’t been able to find it…So this is what I have come up with at this point in my own self education.  I hope you enjoy it – learn something – and maybe even help figure out how we can encourage the politicians in D.C. to move in the right direction with this problem.
