)Helpful hints to get you started on your States study.
)Several states’ worksheets:With the first three worksheets (State Geographical Information, State Flags, and U.S. State Data), you make one copy of each of these for each student and they fill out the applicable sections as they study each state. There is another worksheet you can copy for each state. It includes space for the student to put the state’s flag, map, flower, tree, and bird.Feel free to make your own variations of any of these, adding areas that you want your family to study, or subtracting any that you don’t want to study. With these worksheets, the students are encouraged to some basic research on each state. It is not an overwhelming amount, but enough to get them going that direction!
)Several word searches and crossword puzzles of the states and their capitals. These are just a fun addition to the study.
)A timeline that shows you when each state became a state.I give each student a copy of the timeline either at the end of the study or at the beginning.I find that a timeline is most helpful for me at the beginning, as we are preparing to start a study, and for my students at the end, when they are finishing the study, and can use it as review.
)A timeline game – good for introducing the topic, and for reviewing later.Everyone will be amazed at how much easier it is to play at the end of the study than it was at the beginning.
)Pictures from Dover Coloring Books of several of the state birds, flowers, etc.The coloring books themselves are very inexpensive, and are highly recommended as one of your first States purchases!
Everything in the unit study is reproducible for use with a family or a class.(Dover Coloring Books are also reproducible for use with your family or class….I can only include a few pictures to show you what they are like, but you may buy one of each coloring book, and freely copy them to use with your students. And in the coloring books, you not only get great pictures, you also get small bite-sized pieces of information with each picture. Not bad for a $4.00 investment.)
